Ven. Rahula, the VC of Vidyodaya University

The VC, University of Vidyodaya 1966-1969.

It is appreciated if you can help us to know these occasions and people who are in the pictures.

On the occasion of  book presentation to Management faculty of Vidyodaya University. The young gentlemen in the left corner in the picture is Prof. Dharma de Silva. Others are Mr. K.G.P. Wijesurendra, the deputy registrar of the University and Dr. Walter Simson, the cultural affairs officer of US embassy. (Thanks to Dr. Weerakoon Wijewardhana and Dr. Dheemathei for this information)

Once Ven. Rahula narrated me this story...
"The then minister of education never respected the independence of Universities. He used to give orders to VCs as and whenever he wished without following any order or protocol. Once he had sent a letter to me saying that he was visiting the University on the following day with the Sangha-Raja of Siam. He had asked me to organize a program to welcome the Sangha-Raja.
My answer to him was ' I have already organized a Sramadana Program with the students of the University to clean the University premises tomorrow. So, I regret to inform you that I am not in a position to organize the  reception for Venerable Sangha-Raja of Siam'.

On that day I was working with the students  cleaning the University premises when the minister of education visited the University with the Sangharaja of Siam. Students happily supported me"

I am sure this is that historic Sramadana Program

Passing away of the most Venerable Professor Walpola Sri Rahula Thera, a strictly principled learned monk, on 19th September 1997 is an irreparable lost to the nation.  He rendered a great service uplifting the level of Buddhist studies in the world by writing books and articles, delivering lectures and speeches and teaching in various universities.
